Boyhood Reimagined: Stories of Queer Moms Raising Sons
Queer Parenting, Gender Justice, and the Power of Storytelling
We’re thrilled to share a powerful new book that we know will resonate deeply with our community: Boyhood Reimagined: Stories of Queer Moms Raising Sons, which will be released on June 3, 2025! This moving and necessary anthology features essays and interviews from LGBTQ+ mothers who are redefining parenting, gender, and family in bold and loving ways—including a contribution from one of our own: the incredible writer, activist, and longtime supporter of Queer Power Alliance, June BlueSpruce.
June’s essay, “Dykes Raising Sons,” reflects on what it meant for her and her wife Martha to raise two boys in the 1980s and 90s—at a time when lesbian mothers were still rare, and deeply marginalized. She writes, “We wrestled with the question, How could we love them for exactly who they were, all of who they were, and raise them in a culture that disrespected and devalued who we were? How could we let them go to find their own paths, to challenge or conform to that culture?” These are questions that still feel urgent today.
We are incredibly proud to support the release of Boyhood Reimagined and to uplift this intergenerational work of love, reflection, and resistance.
📘 About the Book
Boyhood Reimagined explores how queer parents are rethinking what it means to raise boys in a world shaped by rigid gender roles and toxic masculinity. Through essays and conversations, it builds a blueprint for progressive parenting and imagines new ways to support boys in becoming whole, self-aware, and liberated people. As Lois Thetford, QPA board member, shared in her Goodreads review, “I was encouraged to see how the views of gender have evolved while the essential parts of mothering have stayed the same: how do we make a safe space for our children to become who they are.”
